Professor Ali Riaz is quoted in a news report in the Asia Times on the emerging opposition in Bangladeshi politics.
The report, “Curious political tie-up emerges before Bangladeshi election” explores the appeal and viability of the new alliance led by a secular icon Kamal Hossain. The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joined the alliance. Professor Riaz said that the “new alliance was likely to last until the election.” Elections to the national parliament is expected to be held at the end of the year.
Riaz said that the members of the alliance, which comes from different persuasions, “will lose significantly if the alliance fails to sustain. Considering the overall political situation, they have very little option other than sticking together.” Riaz said the most important question in regard to how successful the new pairing would be was “How much is the BNP prepared to accommodate its alliance partners?”
