Honors
Ama Oforiwaa Aduonum, MUS, won the Outstanding Achievement in a Leading Role award from the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) National Festival in Pennsylvania.

Rocio Rivadeneyra, Honors Program, was chosen by The Center for Minority Serving Institutions for the MSI Aspiring Leaders Forum in Philadelphia.

Lyndsie Schlink, UMC, won awards from the University Photographers’ Association of America. Schlink was recognized in two categories in the annual publications competition, first place for Illinois State’s gymnastics and baseball team posters, and an honorable mention for Viewbook for the Office of Admissions publication.

John Sedbrook, BIO, was invited by the American Association of Plant Biologists (ASPB) and American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) to provide a Congressional briefing, to the House Agriculture Research Caucus, on his work using gene editing to develop pennycress as a new crop.

During the 55th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) International Conference, Haiyan Xie, TEC, was presented the ASC Outstanding Researcher Award.

Illinois State University’s Grounds Department has been named a winner of the Effective & Innovative Practices Award by APPA, the professional association for educational facilities professionals. The award recognizes the University’s innovative and proactive salt practices before, during, and after winter snow events. Illinois State was recognized July 15 during the 2019 APPA Annual Conference in Denver.

Kim, Jun-Hyun and graduate student Pascal Eyimegwu, CHE, published “Atypical Catalytic Function of Embedded Gold Nanoparticles by Controlling Structural Features of Polymer Particle in Alcohol-Rich Solvents” in Nanotechnology.

Ali Riaz, POL, published “Legislature as a Tool of the Hybrid Regime: Bangladesh Experience” in the PS: Political Science and Politics journal. He also published “The Resurrection of Authoritarianism in the special issue on “Authoritarianism” of the web magazine Shuddhashar from Norway.

Anne Shelley and Julie Derden, both of Milner, co-authored “Exploring the Future of the Teaching Materials Center at Illinois State University: From E-Textbooks to Makerspaces” for Education Libraries.

Scott Jordan and Eric Wesselmann, PSY, presented “Who is the Black Panther? The Psychology of Black Panther, Wakanda, and the Transformative Power of Comic Books” at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July.

Timothy Lash, CHE, presented “Colorful adventures in undergraduate research: synthesis of novel carbaporphyrinoid systems for the symposium on Porphyrins & Related Macrocycles in Undergraduate Teaching and Research at the Division of Chemical Education’s 257th ACS National Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Nancy Novotny and Sandy Nielsen, MCN, presented “Finding Balance: Quasi-Experimental Evaluation of Trading Final Semester Undergraduate Acute-Care Hours for Leadership Clinical Activities,” for the Sigma 2019 Congress: Theory to Practice Catalyzing Collaborations to Connect Globally in Sigma, Calgary, Canada.
