Bangladeshi lawmakers’ comments condoning extrajudicial killings are worrying and will undermine the rule of law in Bangladesh, said Distinguished Professor and Thomas E. Eimermann Professor Ali Riaz to Asia Times. In a report titled “Bangladeshi lawmakers want extrajudicial killings,” Riaz is quoted saying this is an “unprecedented event in any parliamentary democracy.” Recently few Bangladeshi parliament members demanded that police be allowed to kill rapists without a trial. Bangladesh has seen a steep rise in incidents of rape. The demand has been met with extensive criticisms from members of civil society.
