Celebrate Constitution Day on September 17

US Constitution with the words We the People at the top

Join the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CESL) on September 17 to celebrate Constitution Day. CESL will be at Schroeder Plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by to pick up a pocket-sized copy of the Constitution and learn about various civic engagement opportunities and initiatives at Illinois State. Voter registration will also be available.

Constitution Day is commemorated each year on September 17, the date on which the founding fathers signed the document in 1787. The United States Constitution established the basic framework of government, as well as the rights and freedoms afforded individuals.

“Constitution Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate our core value of civic engagement,” said CESL Director Dr. Katy Strzepek. “Commemorating the day allows us to reflect upon the complexities of the Constitution as well as on the history of our imperfect democracy and the ways we can work for a more just and equitable society. It’s particularly important in this election year.”

This year’s Constitution Day celebration also includes the opportunity for Redbirds to participate in a virtual scavenger hunt.

“The virtual scavenger hunt is a great way for students to learn about Illinois State’s connections to the Constitution,” said Strzepek. “All current students can participate regardless of their physical location.”

The scavenger hunt will be hosted via the GooseChase app and will be open from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on September 17. Students can participate in various missions and earn points. First prize will be awarded a $50 Amazon.com gift card; second prize will receive a $25 Amazon.com gift card. Visit the CESL website for full details.

If you need an accommodation to fully participate in the Constitution Day event or virtual scavenger hunt, please contact the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning Office at (309) 438-1100 or CommunityEngagement@IllinoisState.edu. Please allow sufficient time to arrange the accommodation.
