Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz and graduate student Md Sohel Rana presented a co-authored paper at the American Political Science Association (APSA) National Conference. The virtual conference was held September 10–13. Riaz and Rana’s paper, entitled “How Democracy Backslides: Tracing the Pathway in Six Countries,” examines the processes of democratic backsliding in six countries of Asia, Africa, and Europe, namely Bangladesh, Bolivia, Mali, Turkey, Ukraine, and Zambia. It draws on the data from the Freedom House (FH) and the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem). The paper examines whether there are specific milestones in the process of democratic backsliding, and how the process proceeds. The paper was presented at the i-poster session of the Democracy and Autocracy division.
