A recently released study by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools (IARSS) indicates that 55 percent of northeast Illinois school districts that responded to the 2020 Illinois Educator Shortage Study believe there is a teacher shortage and 72 percent believe the substitute teacher shortage is worse. These numbers increase when looked at statewide.
Recommendations by the IARSS include that education leaders “collaborate to develop robust and targeted educator pipeline programs and/or statewide incentives that address educator shortages in a systemic and sustainable way.” Student loan forgiveness is also a recommendation.
