Professor Noha Shawki received a grant from the Student Sustainability Fund in support of the independent study project on fair trade, which is scheduled to take place in spring semester 2022 and will include a week-long immersive experience in Costa Rica during spring break. This project introduces students to the fair trade movement and to the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development.
Students will read a variety of sources and complete a number of assignments in this independent study project. During the week they will spend in Costa Rica they will visit fair trade certified farms and fair-trade cooperatives where they will meet with farmers and coop leaders to discuss fair trade. Students will stay with host families in San Jose and in the Sarapiqui region, which will round out their immersive experience.
