On October 20, Department of Politics and Government Associate Professor Dr. Meghan Leonard presided over a discussion on voting rights and voter suppression for the “Making Democracy Work” series presented by the League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria.
Leonard discussed the importance of voting in a democracy and explained how voter suppression works in many different ways, including voter id requirements, voter purges, and gerrymandering.
Leonard highlighted what people can do to help, including voting for candidates who seek to expand and protect the right to vote, supporting a federal voting rights amendment, and making others aware of how voter suppression works.
