Illinois State University construction management students competed in the 2021 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 3 Preconstruction Competition in Downers Grove October 20-23, 2021.

The preconstruction team consisted of team captain Emma Siragusa, Dominic Bernabei, Brendon Phillips, Ezzry Leon, Connor Lortz, Bryan Cholko, and faculty coach Dr. Euysup Shim, associate professor of technology. The preconstruction team was tasked with preparing a breakdown of the schedule, cost estimating, quality control, safety, and site logistics for an outpatient surgery center provided by Pepper Construction.

“Being a part of the competition team, this year was an amazing experience to have,” Siragusa said. “You really feel like you are in the real world and working with a team that is working toward the same goal. Since I was a transfer student, this is a great way to connect with some of the other construction management students and get to know them better. I feel like every construction management student should compete and be a part of the student competition team because you will learn so much.”

The students attended a prebid meeting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 21 and the team had 13 hours to create their bid proposal and submit it by 8 p.m. that night. On Friday, October 22 at 8 a.m., the team provided an oral presentation to the Pepper Construction team working on the project. Members of Illinois State’s preconstruction team had to demonstrate their full knowledge of the plans and specifications, problem-solving, construction methods, presentation, and communication skills.
