Dr. Buffie Longmire-Avital of Elon University will explore how academic institutions can mitigate systemic injustices experienced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students and create learning environments that promote student success.
The talk “Historically Underrepresented or Historically Excluded? The Creation of an Institutional Infrastructure that Amplifies Student Capital” will be at 7 p.m. January 27 via Zoom. Longmire-Avital will also lead the workshop “Development of a Critical Mentoring Framework for BIPOC Student Success” from 1-2:30 p.m. January 28 via Zoom.

Longmire-Avital is an associate professor of psychology at Elon University. As a previous director of the African and African American Studies Interdisciplinary Minor, and director of the Black Lumen Project, Longmire-Avital will share research regarding the psychosocial impacts of systemic injustices as well as strategies for student success.
