The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Illinois State University is proud to welcome a new faculty member to the speech-language pathology program, Dr. Lidia Huerta, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. Huerta has a joint assignment with the CSD Department and the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program.

Huerta received her Ph.D. in speech-language pathology from the University of Oregon in fall 2022. Prior to completing her doctorate, Huerta was a senior university lecturer and has extensive experience providing clinical services to Latinx/a/o/e children with communication disorders and their families.

Huerta’s research focuses on understanding and supporting the cultivation of culturally and linguistically responsive care through preservice training of speech-language pathology students. Her secondary area of research centers on cultural and linguistic responsive care in speech-language pathology as it relates to service delivery to young dual language learners (0-5 years of age) and their families.

In the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Huerta will teach courses in cultural and linguistic diversity in communication disorders, language development, and language disorders. She will also teach Introduction to Latinx/a/o Studies through her joint assignment with the Latin American and Latino/a Studies program.
