The Dr. John Chizmar and Dr. Anthony Ostrosky Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Award recognizes those who have sought to improve instruction and enhance student experiences through evidence-informed, systematic research, and reflection. Faculty or staff members who have engaged in SoTL work are encouraged to apply by the extended deadline of February 13, 2023. This year’s award recipient will receive campus-wide recognition, a plaque, and a $3,000 monetary award.

The award is administered through the Office of the Cross Endowed Chair in partnership with the Office of the Provost. It specifically recognizes SoTL-oriented scholarship over traditional, disciplinary scholarship. It also recognizes that SoTL scholarship occurs in a wide variety of forms. To that end, the criteria for this award are appropriately broad:

  • Evidence of high quality SoTL work, which can include (but is not limited to) presentations, publications, creative representations, mentoring peers or students in SoTL, or service to SoTL at or beyond Illinois State University.
  • Evidence that an applicant’s own SoTL work has influenced the teaching work of the applicant or others at or beyond Illinois State University.

Interested faculty and staff members are asked to submit a portfolio which includes narrative summaries, reflections on SoTL, copies of select publications, letters of endorsement, and more.

For complete requirements and how to apply, see the Cross Endowed Chair’s website.

The Chizmar and Ostrosky Award is named for two highly respected, now retired professors in the Department of Economics.

The Cross Endowed Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning was established by K. Patricia Cross in honor of her father, Clarence L. Cross, a beloved teacher of physics at Illinois State for over 30 years. Since June 2022, the chair also serves as the director of scholarly teaching at the Center for Integrated Professional Development.
