Professor of Politics and Government Julie Webber was interviewed on Illinois Public Media’s 21st Show with Brian Mackey on April 4. She discussed the recent Nashville school shooting as part of an ongoing pattern. She also examined what role, if any, the multibillion-dollar school industry has done for prevention. Finally, she addressed why political solutions to mass shootings are rarely forthcoming, as well as the role civil society might play in this situation.
Dr. Webber is the author of Beyond Columbine: School Violence and the Virtual, a book that explores school shootings in the United States, similar cases in Finland, Germany, and Norway, and the relation between them. Webber has been studying school shootings for the past 20 years. She is also a member of the core faculty in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Her main interests are political theory, including feminist theory, LGBTQI topics, and contemporary political theory. Her works range from school violence to comedy theory and satire in American politics.
