University Professor Dr. T.Y. Wang published an article titled “Taiwan in 2022: An Eventful Year” in Asian Survey (v.63, no.2). The article is an invited submission as a country review of the year.
As a country expert, Wang’s analysis shows that Taiwan has experienced an eventful year in 2022. Cross-strait tension increased dramatically after Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. China’s belligerent actions have invited international condemnations and have triggered more official engagement between Taiwan and the world community. Taipei’s change of COVID-19 policy has led to a surge of infected cases. With a high inoculation rate, the initial high death count gradually declined by the end of the year. In a global economic slowdown, Taiwan has outperformed many neighboring countries. The close U.S.-Taiwan relationship has been further strengthened with China’s alignment with Russia after the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.
Wang, the chair of the Department of Politics and Government, is on sabbatical leave in fall 2022 and spring 2023.
