Are you looking for a chance to level up toward your future career and make relevant connections? Well, the perfect week for you is coming up. For over 20 years, the School of Communication has hosted COM Week, a communication convention that brings real-life professionals to students. The annual event consists of a variety of panelists and keynote speakers that share their knowledge and professional experiences with students. So, COM Week is important for students because it allows them to get a look at their future career in communication and make connections with alumni and other professionals.

COM Week 2023 will be held during the week of April 10. Most of the events will take place in person at Fell Hall, with some in other buildings. The theme of this year’s COM Week is “level up,” meaning that students will be given the chance to enhance their knowledge in many ways. This theme ties directly to retro electronic games and Fell Hall will be decorated to represent it. There will be over 20 different events happening throughout the course of the week. Some of the panels that will be presented include a grad school panel, a fashion and beauty panel, and two social media panels.

There will also be many important speakers and professionals that attend COM Week, some of whom are alumni. Other speakers include the executive producer for News 12 Long Island Alicia Bettes, owner of her own graphic design company Micah Vetter, and popular drag queen Sharon ShareAlike. Eric Hoss, technology director at State Farm Insurance, will also be hosting a keynote session and an interview workshop.

Kyah Joseph, senior public relations student and School of Communication Promotion and Development team intern, encourages students to attend COM Week to get a better look at their future and make connections with alumni.

“COM Week is a great way to make connections and help guide you on a path toward your career,” said Joseph. “This year, I am most excited for the awards and scholarships that will be offered to communication students during the week. This shows that the students hard work and dedication is truly paying off.”

Students can expect professional development opportunities throughout the week-long convention. They are encouraged to participate and take advantage of the resources that will be provided. This is just one step that can help students advance toward their future career, so they should not miss out.
