The Civil Service Council will feature a Civil Service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn about and applaud Center for the Performing Arts manager, Nick Benson.

What is your position on campus and how long have you been with the University?

I’m the Manager for the Center for the Performing Arts and I started in the Fall of 2017.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

My goals were always to be on the administrative side of the Arts, so knowing that my position is a connecting point between the students’ amazing work and the public is wonderful. Also, my staff of 14 part-time students that are the Box Office and event managers for performances keep everyday exciting for me. No two days are ever the same.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?

I recently finished my term as President of Community Players Theatre in town, and I love playing tennis at Evergreen Racquet Club. Beyond that I enjoy quiet time on my Xbox and spending time with my fiancé. Although much of that quiet time has been put on hold as we plan for our wedding Labor Day weekend!

What else would you like others to know about you or your time at ISU?

I have loved my time at ISU as my position in the CPA lets me work directly with an incredibly diverse group of individuals. I’m a proud Alum of the University and am grateful that I can be a part of making the ISU experience the best it can be for our current and future Redbirds.

More about Benson from Jean Miller, dean of Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts:

Nick occupies a complex and highly visible position on campus and in the community. His Music Business degree from ISU and MBA from Loyola University Chicago prepared him well for his responsibilities. But, it is important to know that Nick, through his own vision, knowledge of arts administration, and efforts has transformed the Center for the Performing Arts into an exceptional professional venue. His job as manager of the Center for the Performing Arts is multi-faceted, and includes developing class and performance schedules, finance and budget, event tickets, box office sales, promotion and publicity, patron relations and safety, and much more. He also works with the associate dean, General Council, and me on developing contracts, such as those for ISU Parking and Transportation and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. I am proud of all his accomplishments. My colleagues would agree that Nick is a consummate professional. I have learned a great deal from him!
