Every month, the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State University community to connect. This month, readers can get to know Nikki Brauer ’91, M.S. ’93, COEE, CWPM, CHWC, director of Health Promotion and Wellness.

  • Job title/position: Director, Health Promotion and Wellness
  • Job duties: Oversee department initiatives and budget for students and employees at ISU. Besides my administrative role, I developed the Ergonomics program at ISU and enjoy assisting individuals with making their workspaces more comfortable, less physically taxing, and overall healthier. I also serve as a certified health and wellness coach and recently began advising our Students Ending Rape Culture (SERC) sponsored organization.
  • How long have you been an employee at ISU?: 30 years as an employee. I worked in Human Resources in their employee wellness program for 16 years, then the program transitioned to the Division of Student Affairs to create the Health Promotion and Wellness Department in 2009.
  • What do you love most about working at ISU?:  I love the relationships built with colleagues over the years. I am grateful for how collaborative folks are at Illinois State, and lastly, I appreciate the opportunities to be a part of the lives of employees and students as they reach higher levels of health and wellbeing. My work at ISU has filled me with such a high sense of purpose and calling.
  • What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?: When I was a student at Illinois State I was involved with the Gamma Phi Circus. I performed in Acro Sport and Women’s High Rings.
  • When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?: Mostly I spend time with my family, Chloe (daughter) and Eric (spouse). I also enjoy walking and playing ball with our golden retrievers Lola and Romeo, volunteering with my church, New Covenant Community, spending time at my friend Susan’s pool, or playing Bunko with friends.
  • What is your favorite spot on campus?: My favorite spot on campus is the Quad. The Quad is very beautiful and feels like home to me. When I walk through the Quad, I typically run into someone I know and can connect. This happened all the years I was a student at ISU and still happens today.
  • What quote most inspires you? Why?: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” Eleanor Roosevelt. These words empower me to continue to dig deep for strength and confidence when situations and others are a challenge.
