Every month, the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State University community to connect. This month, readers can get to know Sheri Bettis ’07, M.S. ’19, interim director for the National Board Resource Center.

Job title/Position: Interim director for National Board Resource Center

Job duties: Provide support and professional development for teachers pursuing their national board certification as well as current Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in Illinois.

How long have you been an employee at ISU?: Three years

What do you love most about working at ISU?: The people. Building connections and helping one another is the Redbird way and I have experienced it as a community member, student, grad student, and an employee.

What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?: I am a first-generation college graduate.

When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?: Talking movies with my son; getting tea with my daughter; watching live music with my husband; being entertained by our Corgi dogs, Max and Delilah; gardening; creative cooking; reading; or napping—because of all the other things. Ha ha.

What is your favorite spot on campus?: It is definitely hard to pick just one. I love the Redbird statue and swings outside of DeGarmo, the flowers on the Quad, and the sixth floor at Milner.

What quote most inspires you? Why?: I love quotes so choosing one is impossible! Brené Brown, Maya Angelou, any change agent or disruptor! I love quotes that make you feel you can be vulnerable and true to yourself and still belong and find your place. The following quotes are from Brené Brown:

“Vulnerability is the core of all emotions and feelings. To feel is to be vulnerable. To believe vulnerability is a weakness is to believe that feeling is a weakness. When we walk away from vulnerability, we leave behind what gives purpose and meaning to living.”

“To me, a leader is someone who holds her- or himself accountable for finding potential in people and processes.”

“What we know matters, but who we are matters more.”
