The Illinois State University Police Department (ISUPD) has once again received tier one accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP). University Police first achieved the milestone back in 2019.

This signifies the department has at least 69 policies and procedures that are consistent with high standards in policing. These standards are divided into four categories, which include administration, operations, personnel, and training.

“Progressive and proactive are two words that immediately jump to mind after visiting ISUPD,” said ILEAP director, Jeff Hamer. “ISUPD has instituted the Community Engagement Unit, social media, a Safe Redbird app, Sage the therapy dog, and each officer’s genuine caring personalities to connect with Redbirds, visitors, and faculty.”

Only 60 Illinois agencies have achieved Illinois accreditation since the program was launched more than 10 years ago. That’s about 5% of all Illinois police agencies.

“The Illinois Chiefs are very proud of Chief Woodruff and the ISU Police Department for this accomplishment,” said Kenny Winslow, the executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP).

The Illinois State University Police Department was established by the Illinois Legislature in 1957. It consists of approximately 30 sworn officers, an outreach K-9, administrative staff, and its own dispatch center.
