Every month, the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State University community to connect. This month, readers get to know Shannon Darling, academic advisor, University College and Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).

Job Title/Position: Academic Advisor, University College and Communication Sciences and Disorders

Job duties: In University College, I primarily assist first-year fine arts students with course selection and transitioning into college life. I also work with students interested in changing their major, navigating academic probation, and any other academic-related concerns. For my CSD students, I advise them on course planning, graduate school preparation, and helping with any other personal challenges that might arise.

How long have you been an employee at ISU? I started at ISU in July of 2016, so seven years. I started in University Housing Services as the residence hall coordinator for Hewett Hall and then transitioned to advising in 2018.

What do you love most about working at ISU? My students and my colleagues. My students are wonderful to work with and help me feel like I am making a difference. And my colleagues because they are truly a compassionate bunch and make my job fun!

What is one fact about you that might surprise people? I love going to the movies. If you remember the old Wehrenberg Movie Theatre intro (that takes you through the decades) when it lands on the modern movie theatre lobby, the group of girls standing there are my friends and me in high school.

When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing? I am either singing in a musical, traveling to St. Louis, or lounging at home with my husband and very spoiled pit bull-boxer, Honey Bear.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? The Quad. I know that might seem like the obvious answer, but when I first came to ISU, it was the Quad that made me fall in love with campus. I especially love the Quad filled with students on their way to class or just hanging out.

What quote most inspires you? Why? “It’s good to be curious about many things.” —Mister Rogers. Mister Rogers was delightful and full of all sorts of meaningful quotes and knowledge. Being curious leads to many things, like innovation and creativity. And maybe I have watched too much Ted Lasso, but I think being curious is a good thing!
