On Tuesday, October 17, the Department of Politics and Government hosted a panel titled “Supreme Issues: Abortion, Affirmative Action, and Ideology in the U.S. Supreme Court.” Professors Meghan Leonard and Tom McClure were joined by Dr. Jana Albrecht from Illinois State University Enrollment Management to discuss how recent Supreme Court decisions have impacted policy in Illinois and at Illinois State, in particular.
The panelists addressed what college admissions decisions look like in a post-affirmative action environment. Albrecht noted that the overturning of affirmative action did not particularly impact Illinois State, as the University has not used race as an explicit admission criterion in many years.
The event was open to all majors and was well-attended with standing room only. Students were enthusiastic to hear how national-level policy from the Supreme Court influences local institutions. The panel attracted students from different departments and majors across the University.
