The Student Government Association (SGA) is celebrating its 100th year of serving the student body at Illinois State University. As the official governing body of Illinois State University, SGA’s main goals are to advocate to the administration on behalf of the student body’s interests and concerns and to encourage student participation in the institution’s decision-making process.

University Archivist April Anderson-Zorn reflected on the role of SGA during its 100-year history, stating, “Throughout Illinois State University’s history, service has been a core function of student activities. From the Civil War to World War I and II, and to recent events, Redbirds have served communities in need. Service and a desire to help students spurred the formation of the first ISNU student government.”

“Although it is an immense honor to serve in this position, I think the most meaningful honor to me is getting to carry on the century-long legacy of my predecessors,” stated SGA president Eduardo Monk, Jr. “There is such a rich history with student government, and it has been a joy to continue the longstanding tradition of serving students and advocating for the issues facing our generation. We’ve made incredible strides with mental health, DEI, and campus safety, and I hope my successors will aspire to have a positive impact on the student body long into the future.”

To honor SGA’s 100 years of SGA’s contribution to Illinois State and its students, the University will celebrate its centennial on Saturday, October 14, as part of the University’s annual Homecoming festivities. The breakfast event will be held in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Former members and advisors of the Student Government Association are welcome to attend. The celebration will consist of a breakfast, short program, and time to reminisce with fellow SGA alumni and current SGA students. SGA alumni and other interested attendees are asked to register online by October 5. After this deadline, contact Jill Benson or call (309) 438-2008. There is no cost to attend, but a $20 gift per alum to the Leadership Initiative Fund is encouraged.
