Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora is taking part in a research collaboration with Ithaka S+R and Cave Canem funded by The Wallace Foundation.
The project, “Magnitude and Bond: A Field Study on Black Literary Arts Organizations,” will explore the organizational needs, strategies, and models that enable Black literary arts organizations such as Obsidian to thrive despite adverse socioeconomic conditions.
In addition to Obsidian, Cave Canem has engaged the leadership of Furious Flower, Hurston/Wright Foundation, and The Watering Hole to provide insight and expertise rooted in decades-long engagement with the Black literary arts community. By doing so, the project can tell the story of how Black-led literary arts organizations have been instrumental in shifting the American literary and cultural landscapes and amplifying voices of the African Diaspora.
Ithaka S+R and Cave Canem will produce a narrative report and sustainability framework and hold a webinar presenting the findings in the winter of 2024.
