The Civil Service Council will feature a Civil Service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn about and applaud Assistant Superintendent of Building Maintenance Arnold Hernandez.

What is your position on campus and how long have you been with the University?

I serve as the assistant superintendent of building maintenance. I have been in this role for eight years. In this role I supervise 13 building mechanics for University Housing. This past December, I celebrated 36 years at ISU in Facilities Management.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Each year approximately 6,000 students move into University Housing. A lot of work goes into preparing facilities for these students. In the dorms alone, there are over 3,300 rooms that we need to turn over for the upcoming academic year. I also manage large maintenance projects for University Housing. I am honored to be able to work with the talented housing staff and my amazing team year in and year out. During ISU Move-In, I find it gratifying to watch students come to campus with their families starting their college experience in the spaces we have created for them.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?

I enjoy watching “spaghetti westerns” and cooking for my family and friends. They are all good sports when it comes to trying my new recipes. I am blessed to have the support of my beautiful wife and our three amazing children. I love spending time with them whether it be at home with a family movie night or out and about at children’s activities. As a family, there’s nothing better than being able to enjoy the company of good friends and their families.

What else would you like others to know about you or your time at ISU?

In December of 1987, I was the first minority to participate in the building mechanic training program for ISU’s Office of Residential Life. Joining this program changed the dynamic and trajectory of ISU’s building mechanic crew, which had only consisted of white males previously. This program provided the opportunity to gain experience which led to my advancement into a full-time mechanic. Excelling as a building mechanic, I was prepared to move into the role of building mechanic foremen. My experiences and relationships as a foreman are what prepared me for my current position as assistant superintendent of building maintenance. The relationships and experiences throughout my tenure at ISU is what I am most grateful for.
