Jason Casteel has been awarded a scholarship by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). The ISAC program aids licensed social workers with master’s degrees who want to obtain their Professional Educators License (PEL) with an endorsement in school social work. It is designed to encourage social workers to practice in Illinois schools, where there has been a shortfall of qualified professionals to provide services since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the scarcity of mental health professionals right now, our students are a huge asset to districts across Illinois, many of whom we partner with,” said Field Education Director Ingrid Brown. “This funding will help support Jason going into his practicum and beyond!”

“With my experience working with youth and experience in the field, it made perfect sense to come to come to ISU to meet this need.”

Casteel, who has a background as a therapist, hopes to provide social work services to students in rural Illinois following his graduation in 2025. “As a clinician in rural community mental health I noticed an increase in youth clients coming to the agency. I also noticed an increased need for social workers in the schools,” said Casteel. “With my experience working with youth and experience in the field, it made perfect sense to come to come to ISU to meet this need.”

“The School of Social Work takes great pride in Jason Casteel,” said Interim Director Joseph Blaney. “The Illinois Student Assistance Commission scholarship he received recognizes his hard work and experience along with a stamp of approval on our school social work specialization. We are excited for his future!”

For those looking to join Jason in obtaining their post-M.S.W. Professional Educator’s License, the School of Social Work offers a yearlong 17 credit graduate certificate. The School of Social Work’s preferred admission deadline is February 1. Illinois State is a participating institution for the ISAC scholarship.

Congratulations, Jason! And thank you to ISAC for this generous award!
