The Illinois Appellate Court for the Fourth Judicial District will conduct an oral argument at Braden Auditorium inside the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University on April 17, 2024. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Politics and Government and the McLean County Bar Association.
The Fourth District is based in Springfield. This judicial body considers appeals filed in trial courts from 41 counties including Rock Island, Winnebago, Sangamon, and McLean counties. This court typically rules on over 5,000 appeals per year.
This will be the third time that the Fourth District holds an oral argument at Illinois State. The first time was more than a decade ago, and the last time was spring 2023.
Students enrolled in the advanced legal research and writing class offered in the legal studies program will be given assignments based on the case set for argument. Although the court has not announced which case it will hear, it is expected to be a criminal appeal.
This event is open to the public. All spectators will be required to go through metal detectors. Persons attending will not be allowed to bring backpacks into the auditorium. Cell phones must be turned off.
