Each year Housing Services honors a select number of outstanding resident/community assistants (RA/CAs) who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to leadership and academic excellence. Recipients of the award receive up to $500 in financial support. This year, five students were selected for the RA/CA Academic Scholarship.

Solomon Martin is a community assistant (CA) currently studying elementary education at Illinois State. His character, academic achievements, and leadership qualities make him a highly qualified recipient of the RACA Academic Scholarship.

“Solomon Martin has a genuine passion for his chosen field of study,” said his supervisor. “He consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and an eagerness to engage with diverse perspectives.”

Martin notes that the scholarship will help to alleviate financial burdens while assisting him in his plans for the spring semester.

“I feel that this scholarship will benefit me greatly in regard to preparing for my classes this upcoming spring. Taking care of things such as buying textbooks can be really difficult to do for a lot of students,” said Martin.

Having a strong support system, Martin explains that he wouldn’t have been able to get to where he is today without his family, friends, and faith.

“I am a firm believer in God, and I feel as if my spiritual relationship has given me the strength to carry on,” said Martin. “I also am very grateful for the support of my family, friends, colleagues and supervisors.”
