Bangladesh held a parliamentary election on January 7, 2024. The incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party, the Bangladesh Awami League was running for the fourth consecutive term. Major opposition parties boycotted the election. The election drew international media’s attention due to eroding democracy in the country and geopolitical contest between the Western nations including the United States on the one hand and India, Russia, China on the other.

Ahead of, on the election day, and after the results were declared, Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz was extensively quoted in news reports by international media including the New York Times, BBC News, and Time Newsweekly. He was interviewed several times by television channels including the BBC, DW, and CNA. Furthermore, Riaz published six commentaries.

He was interviewed by the BBC World Television (January 5), BBC News (January 7), German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle Television (January 5, January 6, and January 7), Indian WION television (January 7), and Singapore CNA Television (January 8).

On January 2, he was interviewed by the NPR Boston affiliate WGBH about the conviction of Peace Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. Professor Yunus was convicted by a labor court on January 1 which drew criticisms from around the world and described as politically motivated. He is currently on bail.
