On Wednesday, April 10, at 4:30 p.m., Dr. Juana Goergen, M.A ‘86, will deliver a bilingual reading of her poetry on the second floor of Milner Library as part of National Library Week and National Poetry Month. A book signing will follow her presentation.
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the Latin American and Latino/a Studies program are pleased to host Goergen, a professor and poet, to be inducted into the CAS Alumni Hall of Fame. Goergen is emerita professor of modern languages at DePaul University in Chicago and visiting professor at InterAmerican University Arecibo Campus, Puerto Rico and at University of Tuebingen in Germany. In 2017 she was awarded the Latino Teaching Award at DePaul University, selected by Latino students as “the most influential professor in their academic and personal lives.”
As a poet, Goergen has published La sal de las brujas/Witches Salt (finalist of Letras de Oro Award, Betania 1997) and La piel a medias/Shared Skin (2003), Las Ilusas/Dreamers (Desarraigos, Serie Vocesueltas, ContraTiempo, 2008) and Mar en los huesos/Sea in my Bones (Pandora/Lobo estepario, 2018). Her poetry has been published in journals and anthologies, most recently Los otros exilios (2021). She initiated and coorganized the celebrated International Poetry Festival del Festival/Poesía en abril in Chicago. She has been awarded the ContraTiempo Poesía/Cultura/Poetry and Culture Award and the José Revueltas Poetry Award.
