Charlton has recently embarked on a new professional venture with the support of the FIREbird Award, which provides funds to undergraduate students pursuing additional career development through research opportunities. With these funds, Charlton is working at a research lab under the guidance of Assistant Professor Susana Calderon.

Charlton and Dr. Calderon’s research is investigating the potential correlation between probiotic yogurt consumption and a healthy oral microbiome in children ages 5-6 years old. The oral microbiome’s impact on overall health is significant, especially concerning cardiac, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. This research aims to pave the way for preventive measures against chronic illnesses later in life.

When reflecting on her research journey, Charlton emphasized the immense preparation required for crafting, approving, and implementing a research plan. Despite the challenges, she acknowledged the importance of meticulous planning in ensuring the success and credibility of scientific research endeavors.

Looking ahead, Charlton is eager to pursue a career in nursing. Post-NCLEX, she plans to work in a labor and delivery unit to gain initial experience as a full-time nurse. Enthusiastic to expand her expertise, Charlton plans to transition to an emergency room unit to gain critical care experience, eventually aiming to advance her education to become a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Beyond her academic and professional pursuits, Charlton is a proud MCN Nursing student who jumps at every opportunity to meet prospective nursing students and help undergraduate students navigate nursing as a peer support person. Charlton’s journey at MCN exemplifies the ambition of aspiring student nurses.
