As we approach the end of the spring semester, University Housing Services is pleased to announce this term’s recipients of the Resident Assistant and Community Assistant (RACA) Academic award. The RACA academic scholarship is presented to resident (RA) and community assistants (CA) who exemplify success in the classroom, as well as in the RA/CA Leadership role. This semester, five $500 academic scholarships were awarded to outstanding students.

Noted for her strong community-oriented leadership style and devotion to being a team player, scholarship recipient Lauren May was an excellent candidate for the RACA academic award.

“Receiving this scholarship represents far more than just financial support to me. It affirms that my efforts as a CA have been impactful and meaningful, and that acknowledgment serves as a source of motivation for me in this role,” explains May. “This scholarship reinforces my sense of purpose in my community, and it will continue to remind me of my importance as not only a mentor to my residents, but also as a friend.”

When asked to recall a time that signifies the impact of this scholarship on her life, May recounts a particularly meaningful encounter with a resident.

“After a resident confided in me for support, they expressed to me that they couldn’t have chosen a better person to seek help from,” said May. “Hearing those words from a resident empowered me to continue to contribute positively to my community.”

May explained she’s grateful for past mentors who have encouraged her in her personal and professional growth. “In high school, one of my teachers foresaw my potential as a future educator, even when I would constantly doubt my abilities,” May said. “Her encouragement led me to explore becoming a CA, and I have seen myself grow into the supportive figure she once envisioned years ago.”
