A new scholarship has been created in memory of Judith (Judy) Bernoteit, a 1967 Illinois State University graduate in elementary education who taught 45 years.

The Judith A. Bernoteit Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education was created by Bob and Stephanie Bernoteit in loving memory of his aunt, Judy Bernoteit, in support of future elementary teachers of distinction at Illinois State University.

She was a lifelong resident of Joliet and began her career in Plainfield School District 202, teaching elementary students in first through third grade at Crystal Lawns School. Most of her career was dedicated to teaching first grade.

Known to her students and their families as “Miss B,” she provided a warm and engaging learning environment with high expectations for the potential and success of all learners. She described the early days of a new school year, getting to know children and their families, as one of the most exciting parts of her job and something she always looked forward to.

Judy went above and beyond to help students in her classroom feel special, making quilts for them and having in-classroom lunches. She routinely communicated with parents, often calling them in the summer to see how students were doing.

She excelled at helping students develop their reading skills, especially those who were initially challenged by this skill. She taught more than 1,000 students over the course of her distinguished career.

Former students reflected positively on their time in her classroom, citing her as a favorite teacher, one who respected them, and in turn, whom they respected.

She was a generous colleague who also supported aspiring and new teachers in the early years of their careers through formal and informal mentorship. Many went on to become colleagues at Crystal Lawns School. She was also a continual learner, noting with appreciation, the great school principals with whom she served.

Judy retired in 2013 as the professional with the longest tenure in Plainfield District 202. Colleagues recognized her by naming the street in front of Crystal Lawns School, “Miss B Street.”

This scholarship is established by her family in her loving memory and in support of future elementary teachers of distinction who study at Illinois State University.
