CAST Connections, in collaboration with University College’s Julia N. Visor Center, Health Promotion and Wellness, and Milner Library, is hosting a ‘Night Against Procrastination’ study session to help students prepare for their final exams.
The event will take place on Sunday, December 1, from 7 p.m. to midnight, on the sixth floor of Milner Library. Usually held toward the end of each semester, the Night Against Procrastination provides academic support resources geared toward helping students in their goals toward good academic standing.
The group study night will include 30-minute study sessions, themed break times, social media challenges, fun giveaways, and other resources.
The program director for CAST Connections, Tamekia Bailey, and the coordinator of academic support communities for the Julia N. Visor Academic Center, Deanna Stewart, both emphasized the impact of study sessions on students’ networks, mental health, and overall success.
“There are few fun facilitated study sessions on campus for students, and this is an opportunity to fill the gap for students. Research suggests that study sessions help students build relationships, create a supportive network, improve time management skills, and alleviate stress and anxiety,” said Bailey.
The inaugural Night Against Procrastination was held at Milner Library in March 2023. Since then, CAST Connections has expanded their partnership to include other units on campus.
“This year, we are partnering with Health Promotion and Wellness to bolster students’ wellness during this high-pressure time. Additionally, we’re promoting the Redbird Safe app, specifically encouraging students to use Redbird Safe Walk when attending and leaving the events and thanks to Deanna, we’ve added fun activities to the study session,” Bailey explained.
“Studying can be fun, and we are excited for students to engage in this collaborative study environment! We are hoping to foster an enjoyable, productive, and supportive space for students as they prepare for their final exams. Students will be able to practice the Pomodoro Method, identify and access support services that are available during success week and finals week, and experience peer support and a sense of belonging,” Stewart said. “We want students to dress comfortably, bring friends, and enjoy building community in this environment.”
The event is free and open to all Illinois State University students. Please contact Tamekia Bailey or Deanna Stewart for collaboration and/or to get more information about the Night Against Procrastination.
“If your unit or department would like to collaborate with us, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We want these events to become staples of the ISU community throughout the semester, not just during Success Week,” added Bailey.
