College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) Dean Chad McEvoy has named Dr. Lucas Maxwell chair of the Department of Agriculture, effective July 1, 2025.
Maxwell began his career at Illinois State University in 2017, working with students at the undergraduate and graduate levels pursuing degrees in agricultural education, communication, and leadership. He is active at both the state and national levels in agricultural education, serving on the Illinois Agricultural Education University Council and the National FFA Agricultural Issues Career Development Event committee. During his time at Illinois State, Maxwell has chaired the Department of Agriculture Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion Committee; the Curriculum Committee; and the Recruitment Committee; and has served on numerous other committees. He also serves as faculty advisor or co-advisor to multiple student organizations. His research focuses on secondary and post-secondary professional development in teaching and recruitment, retention, and placement in agriculture food fiber and natural resources.

The Department of Agriculture possesses a wonderful history and a passionate group of faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders,” said Dr. McEvoy. “I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish together in this next chapter for the department.”

Maxwell has been the recipient of numerous awards, including receiving the Distinguished Young Educator from the Non-land-grant Agriculture and Renewable Resources Universities (NARRU), the Outstanding Mid-Career Alumni form the College of Agricultural Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the Outstanding Service Award from the Department of Agriculture, and was recognized by the National FFA organization for his service to agricultural education and FFA with the Honorary American FFA Degree. Maxwell was selected to participate in the inaugural class of the College of Applied Science and Technology Leadership Exploration and Development (LEAD) program as well as the Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP).
