Queer Coalition, Illinois State University’s LGBTQIA+ affinity group for faculty, staff, and graduate students, is excited to present In Her Image: A Film Series Celebrating Queer Women and The Stories They Tell. This special event will run February 19 through March 19 at the historic Normal Theater, showcasing four independent films directed by and starring queer women. All screenings are free and open to the public. They will also feature a short scholarly introductions from Illinois State faculty members.


Wednesday, February 19, 7 p.m.: Dykes, Camera, Action! (2018)

Lesbians didn’t always get to see themselves on screen. This documentary examines the history of queer cinema from the perspective of the women who made it happen. Introduced by Dr. Liv Stone of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Wednesday, February 26, 7 p.m.: The Watermelon Woman (1996)

A young Black lesbian filmmaker probes into the life of The Watermelon Woman, a 1930s Black actress who played ‘mammy’ archetypes. Introduced by Dr. Caitlin Mercier of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program and Department of Psychology.

Wednesday, March 5, 7 p.m.: Lingua Franca (2019)

Olivia, an undocumented Filipina trans woman, falls in love in Brooklyn, though issues around identity, civil rights, and immigration threaten her very existence. Introduced by Dr. Li Zeng of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Film.

Wednesday, March 19, 7 p.m.: Lyle (2014)

Leah’s grief over her toddler’s death turns into paranoia and terror when she begins to suspect her neighbors are part of a satanic cult. Introduced by Dr. Eric Wesselman of the Department of Psychology.
