Manifesting Our Legacies in Multiple Languages at Illinois State University
Members of the bilingual cohort in the School of Teaching and Learning at Illinois State University are part of a unique experience that fosters collaborative learning and community. Starting their junior year, bilingual cohort candidates are immersed in course work and experiences that prepare them for diverse classrooms specific to bilingual education. Candidates improve upon their bilingual proficiency in Spanish and have the opportunity to work with other bilingual endorsement candidates focusing on languages such as Polish and Mandarin as their other language of instruction. Overall, bilingual endorsement candidates build confidence in using multiple languages in the classroom as they manifest their legacy in education.
Manifestando Nuestros Legados en Varios Idiomas en la Universidad Estatal de Illinois
Los miembros de la cohorte bilingüe de la Universidad Estatal de Illinois forman parte de una experiencia única que fomenta el aprendizaje colaborativo y la comunidad. A partir del tercer año, los candidatos a la cohorte bilingüe se sumergen en cursos y experiencias que los preparan para diversas aulas específicas de la educación bilingüe. Los candidatos mejoran su competencia bilingüe en español y tienen la oportunidad de trabajar con otros candidatos a la cohorte bilingüe que se centran en idiomas como el polaco y el mandarín como su otro idioma de instrucción. En general, los candidatos a la cohorte bilingüe adquieren confianza en el uso de varios idiomas en el aula a medida que manifiestan su legado en la educación.
Three bilingual teacher candidates shared the following in an interview about their experience in both Spanish and English.

What is your name and major? What grades are you interested in teaching?
My name is Vania Chavez (she/her/ella) and I am specializing in bilingual and bicultural education at the primary level. At the moment, I would love to be able to teach first or second grade.
¿Cómo te llamas y que es tu especialidad? ¿Qué grados te interesa enseñar?
Me llamo Vania Chavez (she/her/ella) y me estoy especializando en educación bilingüe y bicultural al nivel primaria. Por el momento, me encantaría poder enseñar en primer o segundo grado.
Why did you choose to pursue bilingual/bicultural education?
I decided to specialize in bilingual/bicultural education because bilingualism is a big part of my identity as a Latina. My language is interconnected with my culture. I am Mexican and my first language was Spanish. My parents taught me from a young age to value my roots and my language was an aspect that connects to that. In my primary education, unfortunately, I did not have much representation of my culture or language, so I used this lack of inclusion as an inspiration to be the teacher I always wanted to have. I want my future students to feel represented in my classroom and to feel proud of where they come from.
¿Por qué decidiste formarte en educación bilingüe/bicultural?
Decidí especializarme en la educación bilingüe/bicultural porque el bilingüismo forma una gran parte de mi identidad como Latina. Mi lenguaje se interconecta con mi cultura. Yo soy mexicana y mi primer idioma fue el español. Mis padres desde pequeña me enseñaron a valorar mis raíces y mi idioma fue un aspecto que se conecta a eso. En mi educación primaria desafortunadamente no tuve mucha representación de mi cultura o idioma, por lo cual usé esta falta de inclusión como una inspiración para ser la maestra que siempre quise tener. Quiero que mis futuros alumnos se sientan representados en mi salón y se sientan orgullosos de dónde vienen.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in teaching?
I recommend that you do some research on the different teaching programs that exist. There are many programs and options for everyone. If someone is interested in bilingual education, there is a lot of support, including teachers like my professor, Dr. Vivian Presiado, who has a lot of experience in bilingual classrooms.
¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que considere una carrera en la enseñanza?
Les recomiendo que investiguen sobre los diferentes programas que existen sobre la enseñanza. Hay muchos programas y opciones para todos. Si alguien está interesado en la educación bilingüe en específico hay muchos apoyos incluyendo a profesores como mi profesora, Dra. Vivian Presiado que tiene mucha experiencia en aulas bilingües.
What is your name and major? What grades are you interested in teaching?
My name is Morena Cancela, I use the pronouns she/her, and I am studying bilingual elementary education at the University. I would like to teach in the upper elementary grades, between third and fifth grades.
¿Cómo te llamas y que es tu especialidad? ¿Qué grados te interesa enseñar?
Me llamo Morena Cancela, uso el pronombre ‘ella’, y estoy estudiando educación primaria bilingüe en la universidad. Me gustaría enseñar en los últimos grados de la primaria, entre tercero y quinto grado.
Why did you choose to specialize in bilingual/bicultural education?
I chose to study bilingual education because I think bilingualism is a very valuable skill and I knew I wanted to incorporate it into my career. Additionally, I was part of a bilingual program as a student and I really valued the experience. It gave me the opportunity to stay connected to my language and culture, and I would love to give the same experience to my students.
¿Por qué elegiste especializar en la educación bilingüe/bicultural?
Elegí estudiar educación bilingüe porque pienso que el bilingüismo es una habilidad muy valiosa y sabía que quería incorporarla en mi profesión. Además, yo fui parte de un programa bilingüe como estudiante y realmente valoré la experiencia. Me dio la oportunidad de seguir conectada con mi lenguaje y cultura, y me encantaría darles la misma experiencia a mis estudiantes.
What would you like others to know about bilingual/multilingual education?
I think it’s important for everyone to know that bilingual education is growing and that it’s an amazing opportunity to be a part of both as a student and as an educator. I would encourage others to do research on the different types and formats of bilingual education, as I think there are sometimes misconceptions about who these programs are for. There is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.
¿Qué te gustaría que otros supieran sobre la educación bilingüe/multilingüe?
Creo que es importante que todos sepan que la educación bilingüe está creciendo y que es una oportunidad increíble de ser parte tanto como estudiante como educador. Animaría a otros a investigar sobre los diferentes tipos y formatos de educación bilingüe, ya que creo que a veces hay ideas incorrectas sobre para quiénes son estos programas. Hay una oportunidad para que todos participen.
What is your name and major? What grades are you interested in teaching?
My name is Adriana Rios. At Illinois State I am working towards my bachelor’s degree in bilingual elementary education. I would like to work with students in second to fourth grade.
¿Cómo te llamas y que es tu especialidad? ¿Qué grados te interesa enseñar?
Me llamo Adriana Rios. En Illinois State estoy trabajando para recibir mi licenciatura en Educación Primaria Bilingüe. A mí me gustaría trabajar con los estudiantes de segundo a cuarto grado.
Describe a classroom experience that affirmed your decision to be a teacher.
I feel like I have had many affirming experiences that have reminded me why I am doing this. However, thinking back to a recent one, I remember that in one of my clinical experiences I was working with a student who had just arrived from Guatemala. This student seemed to have difficulty pronouncing English words and was constantly asking for help but was eager to learn. When I told him I spoke Spanish, the look of relief on his face was touching. It reminded me of the difference I can make in students’ lives simply by speaking Spanish.
Describe una experiencia en el aula que afirmó tu decisión de ser maestra.
Siento que he tenido muchas experiencias afirmativas que me han recordado por qué estoy haciendo esto. Sin embargo, pensando en una reciente, recuerdo que en una de mis experiencias clínicas estaba trabajando con un estudiante que acababa de llegar de Guatemala. Este estudiante parecía tener dificultades para pronunciar palabras en inglés y constantemente pedía ayuda, pero estaba ansioso por aprender. Cuando le dije que hablaba español, la expresión de alivio que tenía en su rostro fue conmovedor. Me recuerdo del cambio que puedo hacer en la vida de los estudiantes simplemente por hablar en español.
What advice do you have for someone considering a career in teaching?
I would say that if you have ever been curious about studying to be a teacher, do it. Being bilingual is a blessing beyond multilingual education because even though some see it as a delay or barrier, it can actually open many doors and change lives. It can open many job opportunities, but beyond that, you can create a classroom where students feel safe, accepted, and protected.
¿Qué consejo le daría a alguien que esté considerando una carrera en docencia?
Yo diría que si alguna vez te a dado la curiosidad por estudiar para ser maestra(o), hazlo. Ser bilingüe es una bendición más allá de la educación multilingüe, es porque, aunque unos lo vean como un retraso o barrera en verdad puede abrir muchas puertas y cambiar vidas. Puede abrir muchas oportunidades de trabajo, pero más allá puedes crear un salón donde los estudiantes se sienten seguros, aceptados, y protegidos.
