T.Y. Wang, Chair and Professor of Politics and Government, commented on the historic summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un. In the WGLT interview, Wang noted that just a few months ago, Trump and Kim traded personal insults and threatened each other with nuclear weapons. It is a good idea for leaders of both countries to engage in civilized conversation, he said.
Because the U.S. and North Korea have very different definitions of denuclearization, much uncertainty remains over whether the two sides will be able to make a deal. The best possible outcome for this summit, Wang argued, is a broad outline of an agreement that recognizes denuclearization as the ultimate objective with a process to be determined. Wang also discussed the role of China in the Trump-Kim summit.
