Jennifer Campion Friberg ’06 has made an immeasurable impact on the quality of instruction delivered to K-12 and college-level students across the U.S. She is recognized as an expert for her scholarship and support of faculty in the areas of teaching and learning within higher education.
The educator is among three alumni who will be recognized for their career accomplishments through induction into the College of Education’s hall of fame during Illinois State’s 2018 Homecoming celebration.
Friberg earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction in 2006 from Illinois State University. Her career began at Peoria Public Schools, where she served as a speech-language pathologist for nine years.
While completing her doctorate, Friberg worked as a visiting professor of speech pathology and audiology for the University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The unit later hired her as an assistant professor, and she went on to earn promotion and tenure in 2012. This past August she was promoted to full professor. From 2008-2016, she continued to serve as a part-time speech-language pathologist and consultant for the Illini Bluffs School District in Glasford.
Friberg was selected to be the Cross Endowed Chair for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at Illinois State in 2016. For both the University and her colleagues across the nation, she has become a trusted mentor of evidence-based higher education teaching practices and a leading researcher in the field. This work has had an exponential effect on the preparation of future professionals across all disciplines.
During 12 years at Illinois State, Friberg has penned more than two dozen publications, been awarded numerous external grants, and presented more than 70 sessions and workshops on scholarship in speech-language pathology and higher education instruction. In addition, she co-founded two peer-review journals, Evidence Based Education: EBE Briefs and Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The latter serves as the only journal in her field focused on teaching and learning. She is also the creator and editor of The SoTL Advocate, a faculty/staff resource on current issues in research on teaching and learning.
Prior to coming to Illinois State, Friberg earned her bachelor’s in communicative disorders from San Diego State University in 1995 and her master’s in speech-language pathology from Indiana University in 1997.
Friberg’s external service includes leadership positions for the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the International Society for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Outside the classroom, Friberg is active in supporting student life at Illinois State. She has served as a University Housing faculty mentor for the honors floor, as a faculty advisor for the Delta Zeta sorority, and has been an ISU Leads mentor since 2013.
Friberg is routinely recognized for her excellence in teaching and research. Among the honors she has earned are the Illinois State University Teaching Initiative Award in 2010, the 2016 Contemporary Issues in Communication Sciences and Disorder’s Editor’s Award, and the Star Teacher Award by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2017.
