The Illinois State University Department of Psychology and the Cognitive Behavioral Sciences (CBS) Colloquium Series will present a talk titled “Are People With Autism Spectrum Conditions More Resistant to Context Effects in Preference?” with Jonathan Pettibone, Ph.D., Friday, September 21, at 2 p.m. in 48 DeGarmo Hall. Pettibone is professor and undergraduate program director in the Department of Psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Abstract
Research has suggested that people with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are often less influenced by context and distractors in perceptual and cognitive tasks (Behrmann, Thomas, & Humphreys, 2006; Happe & Frith, 2006). Does this reduced sensitivity to context extend into decision making as well, and what can differences in preference between ASC and non-ASC individuals tell us about the underlying cognitive processes? In this talk, I will discuss recent studies on the attraction and compromise effects with an ASC sample and their implications for existing models of the construction of preference.
CBS Colloquium Series
The CBS Colloquium Series brings high caliber researchers to the Illinois State University campus to share their work with the local academic community.
