Distinguished Professor and Thomas E. Eimermann Professor Dr. Ali Riaz gave a presentation titled “Bangladesh’s Metamorphosis into a Hybrid Regime” at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, in Boston on February 12, 2020.
The presentation was based on his recently published book Voting in a Hybrid Regime: Explaining the 2018 Bangladeshi Election. Riaz argued that the state of democracy in Bangladesh warrants contextualizing within the global backsliding of democracy. In recent years, there has been gradual decline of democracy and the integrity of elections all around the world. The book talk was moderated by Professor Ayesha Jalal, Mary Richardson Professor of History at Tufts University. Riaz’s book provides an incisive examination of Bangladesh’s political environment, rigorous scrutiny of the roles of state institutions including the law enforcement agencies, and meticulous analysis of election results.
