Dr. Meghan Leonard discussed the topic of voter suppression and restoration at the Leadership for Liberation Pop-Up Library Event on September 27. Professor Leonard discussed how historically, the United States has failed to protect voter rights, and in many ways has worked hard to strategically suppress the vote. Beginning with the lack of a right to vote in the Constitution and the failure to live up to the promise of the 15th and 19th Amendments, Leonard showed how states have continued to make it harder to vote. Professor Leonard also discussed the implications of Supreme Court decisions on this right, and how the Court has made it easier to suppress the vote, particularly in a way that targets Black, Latinx, and Indigenous populations.
