Professor Tom McClure’s third edition of The Fundamentals of Criminal Law and Procedure for Paralegals was published in February 2023. McClure co-authored this textbook with Dr. Thomas Eimmerman, retired Chair of the Department of Politics and Government.
This text focuses on teaching students the knowledge and practical skills necessary to function as a paralegal in a criminal defense firm or prosecutor’s office. It traces all aspects of the practice, beginning with investigation and discovery to trial and sentencing.
The book provides realistic and practical examples of actual police and criminal court documents. It also offers expanded coverage of laws concerning insurrection, rebellion, sedition, and hate crimes.
McClure is the acting chair of the Department of Politics and Government in 2022-23. He practiced law for 28 years. His criminal law cases included homicides, major sex offenses, and drug offenses. He was certified as co-counsel in the Capital Litigation Trial Bar when the State of Illinois had the death penalty.
