The Scott M. Elliott Cross-Disciplinary Pilot Grant Program review committee has awarded Dr. Yusuf Sarfati, an associate professor/director of the Middle Eastern and South Asian minor program in the Department of Politics and Government, and Dr. Oguzhan Dincer a professor of economics and the director of the Institute for Corruption Studies at the Illinois State University, with a $4,669 for their project titled, “Corruption and Democracy in Turkey.”

In their project, the researchers will update the Corruption Reflections Index for Turkey by conducting archival research with an aim to include the years between 1930-1960 and 2014-2020. After completing the construction of the index, the study will focus on the longitudinal relationship between corruption and democracy in Turkey by utilizing various democracy indexes.

The aim of Scott M. Elliot Pilot Grant Program funds is to enable research teams to maximize the potential for successful completion of preliminary research and grant submission. This study will foster important collaboration between faculty in the Departments of Politics and Government and Economics to enhance external grant funding.

Sarfati will be taking a sabbatical in 2023-24 to conduct research in Turkey.
