Honors
Wolfgang Stein, BSC, and Steffen Harzsch of University of Greifswald received the Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems Kavli Exploration Award for “A life-cycle perspective on mechanisms of neural resilience.” The researchers aim to understand how different species of crustaceans adapt and respond to changing temperatures throughout their lives, from larval development to adulthood.
Craig Jackson and Charles Edamala, Office of Technology Solutions, recently were recognized in a national survey of higher education IT leaders, the 2023 EdScoop 50 Awards. Jackson won the University Technology Leader of the Year Award, and Edamala won as the Higher Education IT Executive of the Year Award. Illinois State University was the only university to win in both categories.
Nobuko Adachi, ANT, has been appointed to be on The Japan Foundation’s American Advisory Committee for research in Japanese Studies for the next two years. She also has begun her vice presidency of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs.
Publications
Ali Riaz, POL, has published a chapter on constitutionalism and politics in Bangladesh titled, “Constitutionalism interrupted or constitutionalism absent? The divergence of constitution and politics in Bangladesh,” in an edited volume of “A History of the Constitution of Bangladesh: The Founding, Development, and Way Ahead”. Dr. Riaz’s chapter argues that Bangladeshi politics has digressed from the constitutional promises.
Justin Vickers, MUS, released a new commercial album, Justin Vickers: The Poet’s Echo — Songs of Benjamin Britten, John David Earnest, and Colin Matthews (Albany Records, 2023; TROY 1949), on November 1, 2023.
Greg Carter, HIS, received a contract from Rowman & Littlefield Publishers for his monograph tentatively titled, Backtime Religion in the Danish West Indies: Africana Heritage Religion beyond Obeah.
T.Y. Wang, POL, published a co-authored paper, ‘’Strategic Clarity and Taiwanese Citizens’ Confidence in the U.S. Security Commitment,” which appears in Asian Survey. The study examines the relationship between a U.S. policy with a clear defense commitment and Taiwan citizens’ public confidence.
Presentations
Camille Cole, HIS, presented a paper titled, “What is a concession? Mapping, language, and sovereignty in the late Ottoman Empire,” at the Middle East Studies Association’s annual conference.
Katie Jasper, HIS, presented an invited paper titled, “Women in the Wilderness: Female Hermits in the Age of Reform,” at the Renaissance Seminar at Wesleyan University on October 26, 2023.
T.Y. Wang, POL, served as a roundtable panelist at Conference on Hong Kong Politics held at Princeton University, Nov. 3-4, 2023. The conference aims to explore creative ways of promoting Hong Kong Studies after the Chinese Communist government in Beijing implemented a repressive National Security Law.
Lindsay Marshall, HIS, presented her work at two roundtables at the Western History Association Annual Conference: “Reckoning with Animals and Settler Colonialism: More-Than-Human Relationships in the Many American Wests” and “The Effect of Anti-CRT Legislation on History Education.” She also facilitated programming for the Committee on Teaching and Public Education, connecting K-12 teachers with WHA scholars and fostering collaboration.
Touré Reed, HIS, delivered an invited paper to the Philosophy of Race Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania. The program was titled, “Is it Race or is it Racism? Delving into Race Reductionism vs. Class-First Explanations in Social Phenomena.” He also served as keynote speaker for the University of New Mexico-ABQ’s Africana Studies Department’s “Research and Discovery Week.”
