The Office of Sustainability is looking for campus and community members to volunteer at Pass It On Donation Stations starting the week of May 6, 2024, during Move-Out this year.
The Pass It On project started at ISU over 30 years ago with a passionate group of social work students and their professors. Growing weary of the items thrown out during Move-Out, this class began collecting donations and gave them to local community organizations. Since then, University Housing has continued to collect donations inside each residence hall every year during Move-Out and give them to local community organizations.
Recently, these donations have become too burdensome for our local partners. So, the Office of Sustainability collaborated with Housing to collect all Pass It On donations, sort them over the summer, and host a large Free-Cycle event during Welcome Week. This event allows our incoming students to shop for whatever they might need for free.
For Move-Out 2024, the Office of Sustainability and University Housing are continuing their collaboration to collect gently-used items, but this time with Pass It On Donation Stations located outside of each residence hall in addition to the bins inside each residence hall.
“Pass It On will continue to save so many gently used items that might otherwise be put in the dumpster and sent to the landfill,” said Elisabeth Reed, director of the Office of Sustainability. “The collected clothing, bedding, and household accessories will then be given to our incoming students for free throughout Preview and Welcome Week.”
To ensure the success of this Pass It On update, volunteers are being sought during the week of May 6-11, 2024. Campus and community members are all welcome to volunteer for a three-hour shift (or more) to help keep items out of the landfill while continuing the strong Pass It On tradition.
