As the spring of 2024 marks the culmination of academic endeavors for many students, Jo Bollant shares with us their journey as a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student, and now graduate. Bollant’s path to graduation was far from conventional, marked by detours and challenges that ultimately shaped their worldview. Growing up as the eldest of five, Bollant initially adhered to the traditions of their upbringing, attending a Christian college with high hopes. However, their faith journey took an unexpected turn during a transformative two-year stint in Australia.

It was in Australia that Bollant’s passion for social justice was ignited, as they worked alongside the CEO of an organization dedicated to aiding victims of trafficking. Despite facing personal and academic hurdles upon returning to the United States, Bollant remained steadfast in their commitment to effecting positive change in their community. Juggling full-time work with part-time studies, Bollant persisted, eventually found their place at Illinois State University.

Navigating the intersection of personal beliefs and professional ethics has been a central theme in Bollant’s academic and professional development. Their experiences with religious trauma have led them to confront their own biases and preconceptions, particularly in their interactions with faith-based organizations. Despite their reservations, Bollant acknowledges the valuable contributions such organizations can make to the community and seeks to bridge the gap between their personal beliefs and professional obligations.

In their final year of studies, Bollant embarked on an internship at Brightpoint, where they honed their skills as a social worker and advocate. Working with expectant mothers in the doula program, Jo witnessed firsthand the disparities and injustices faced by marginalized communities, particularly in maternal health care. Their dedication to inclusivity and advocacy led him to spearhead initiatives within the organization, championing the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals and advocating for more inclusive practices. This included advocacy work in a macro sense for a more inclusive system and on a personal sense as Bollant shifted in their self-expression and name. Although difficult at first, Bollant pioneered changes that formed a more welcoming space for marginalized communities and individuals.
