On December 17, Dr. Michael Hendricks received the College of Arts and Sciences Kenneth A. and Mary Ann Shaw Teaching Fellowship.

Kenneth A. (Buzz) and Mary Ann Shaw established the endowed fund to support an award for teaching excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences. Each year, two awards of at least $3,500 are made to support the continued development of the recipients’ outstanding teaching.

Hendricks will use the funds from the award for a study abroad trip. He and Dr. Noha Shawki are planning a 10-day study abroad trip to Cuba. The trip will explore Latin American politics, Cuban politics, and sustainable development through fair trade and the slow food movement, topics that align with their research and teaching interests.

They will visit colonial landmarks, revolution sites and museums, and fair-trade farms and cooperatives. By utilizing the fellowship funds for this study abroad experience, the overall cost for students will be reduced significantly. Hendricks and Shawki will work with Illinois State’s Study Abroad Office to offer a program in Cuba that is “designed to be diverse and affordable while cultivating students’ critical thought, intellectual and social growth, as well as, fostering development as a global citizen.”
