In an effort to divert more recyclable waste from landfills, Illinois State University has implemented a pilot program for recycling polystyrene (Styrofoam). The program will run during the summer months and through residence hall move-in time in late August.
Various types of polystyrene—including molded, hard packing material, flexible packing material, and flexible wrapping—are being collected by University Recycling for shipment to Verdeco Plastics, Inc. of Channahon. The pilot program will help gauge the feasibility of a larger, long-term polystyrene recycling effort on campus.
