Graduate student Fahmida Zaman from the Department of Politics and Government has published an article titled “Death of 1947 in Bangladesh’s Popular Memory” in the South Asia Journal.
The essay examines the absence of the history of partition of India in 1947 in the public discourse in contemporary Bangladesh. The 1947 partition created the “East Pakistan” which became independent in 1971 through a nine-month long war. Zaman argues that the Bangladeshi academic and public discourse has discounted the significance of the partition by ignoring the most important event of the century for South Asians.
