John Hooker
Assistant Professor John Hooker of the School of Communication is the recipient of the Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award. He will be honored at the Founders Day Convocation on February 16.
After receiving his Ph.D. in media, technology, and society from Purdue University, Hooker joined Illinois State University as an instructor in 2005 and became a tenure-track faculty member in 2010. Hooker’s commitment to undergraduate education is demonstrated in the significant contributions he has made to the award-winning introductory communication course, Communication as Critical Inquiry (COM110). This course is one of two courses that all Illinois State University students take in their first-year experience to improve student listening and expression skills. Hooker helps plan and co-facilitate a yearly spring colloquium for the instructors to exchange ideas, share updates, and discuss shared areas of interest with the goal of improving the undergraduate experience. He, along with Professor Cheri Simonds, is responsible for training and supervision of the instructors who teach this course. With extensive scholarship and research, he has shown his commitment to the pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment with the goal of impactful communication education for all freshman and some transfer students.
